Let the whispers of the ocean wash over you. The Sea Told Me a Story is a richly textured landscape painting by Elizabeth Marshall, part of her My Country series. Featuring layered acrylics and textured paste, this piece captures the meeting of land and sea — deep navy blues and midnight indigos embracing golden sands and soft cream accents.

Organic, abstract, and evocative of Aotearoa New Zealand's coasts, this piece invites you to hear the story the ocean is always telling.

Inspired by Doctor Point on Blueskin Bay, north of Dunedin.

Artist Notes - General

Elizabeth is a Dunedin-based artist, self-taught and passionate about adding joy to everyday life, expressed through art. Layers of paint and medium are built up over the canvas to create volume and form. This approach gives rise to a sense of movement and life in the work that includes raised surfaces,  dips, slopes, bumps, cracks and lumps. Please zoom in on the images provided to appreciate these aspects of the work.

While the artist attributes meaning to all her artworks, she is keen for the viewer to find their own happiness and meaning in the pattern, colour and texture.

Appreciating textured art is about valuing the beauty in imperfection, perfectly imperfect, organic and irregular. Textured art moves away from traditional art to a tactile experience. Inherent to the design are marks, bumps, lumps, cracks, scrapes and scourges. It is a thing of beauty, like nature herself.

For those new to textured art, the raised surfaces create interaction with light and shadow, with smooth and rough, while embraced within the fluidity of painted effect, and the added element of dimension.

There are several different textures at play in Elizabeth's work. Using different pastes mixed in different ratios, depending on the design. Sometimes the acrylic paint is mixed into the paste; other times it is added after. Sometimes, there are embellishments and other materials used in the construction of a piece.
